STANLIB Kenya wins ‘Best Performing Equity Fund’ at ‘Think Business Africa Investment Awards 2014’ in Nairobi

10 December 2014: The STANLIB Kenya Equity Fund is Kenya's Best Performing Equity Fund, according to ‘The Think Business 2014 Investment Awards 2014'.

The Fund invests in a spread of sectors across the Kenyan economy and in the East Africa region. It has been a long-term consistent performer, with a return of 35% in 2013 and 42% in 2012. Year to date it has had a return of 19.5%* and since inception has returned 20.6% on an annualised basis.

The Kenyan economy has been performing well, says STANLIB Kenya CIO, Kenneth Kaniu. He attributes this to growth in various sectors, including financial services and intermediation, infrastructure spend and construction, telecommunications and real estate.

"The macro-economic environment in terms of interest rates, currency and inflation are low and stable which provide a good backdrop for public market investments. The STANLIB Kenya Equity Fund has its primary exposures in financial services, manufacturing and telecommunications sectors and continues to see value in those sectors going forward", said Kaniu.

The Fund is managed by the team of in-house Kenyan investment professionals, led by Kaniu. While using local expertise and insights to inform their investment decisions, they also leverage off the centralised research team based in STANLIB's head office in Johannesburg.

"The STANLIB Africa collective - comprising our physical offices in 9 countries across the continent - cross-pollinate investment ideas and are able to draw on each other's skills and insights with the aim of delivering consistent investment excellence to our over 400 000 retail and institutional customers",

The Kenya Equity Fund is continuing to gather local assets in both the Retail and Institutional space, according to STANLIB East Africa Regional Director, James Muratha. The asset manager is also targeting Kenyans in the diaspora (those living outside of Kenya), who send an average of 60 million Pound Sterling worth of remittances home to Kenya - via formal channels - each month.

"The Kenyan asset management industry is deepening as investing becomes more accessible - and more of a priority - for ordinary Kenyans, especially the emerging middle classes. From an Institutional perspective, regulatory reform in the pension space is shifting the landscape. The industry is transforming and is set to grow rapidly over the coming years. We want to be the preferred investment destination across Africa by delivering investment excellence, and help our customers reach their investment goals", said Kodisang.

In addition to its Equity Fund, STANLIB Kenya offers a Kenya Shilling Money Market Fund, Balanced Fund and Bond Fund. It plans to launch an umbrella fund and a personal pension plan in early 2015, together with a property IREIT (Income Real Estate Investment Trust).

The "Think Business Investment Awards" recognise the best fund managers, pension funds, collective investment schemes, investment banks and stock brokers in Kenya, and are organised by Think Business. They aim to celebrate exemplary performers and success of the sector. STANLIB Kenya won a total of five awards at the 2014 ceremony, including "Best Trust in Quality Client Service".

Think Business is a leading market research consultancy and magazine in Kenya that provides insights into the banking, insurance and capital markets sectors.
